ARLINGTON, VA. - When soldiers in the rehabilitation program visit Moon Lake at Fort Riley, Kansas, they can fish or paddle, but they can also meditate.

Summer Guide By Fort Riley Mwr

Moon Lake is a small deep lake with calm water and surrounded by trees. Every Tuesday, Soldiers assigned to Fort Riley's Soldier Recovery Unit participate in a guided meditation on its beaches.

Recreational therapist Ben Hatch incorporates an app called Mindfulness Coach into his weekly guided meditations. It was created by the Department of Veterans Affairs' National PTSD Center. The meditation is short and can be done sitting or lying down, Weston explains, which makes it interesting even for those new to it.

One of the exercises the soldiers practiced at Moon Lake was about compassion. It begins with compassion for loved ones, Weston says, and then culminates in self-esteem and respect for others. Soldiers are then invited to continue their meditation or discuss mindfulness practices and other related topics with the participants.

When it comes to meditation, practice makes perfect. Weston notes that it is sometimes difficult for participants to enter or stay in a calm state. With practice, he said, they can let go and become quiet, calm and focused.

Weston notes that short meditation sessions can bring someone back to a state of focus and calm, or even make them feel like they've shifted their perspective.

"It's a great way to check in with yourself and develop a sense of caring and compassion for yourself and others," she says.
