A Difficult Anniversary For Springfield's 183rd
The C-130E is the extended range of the C-130B, with dual underwing fuel tanks and extended range and endurance capabilities. US Command is the primary user with more than 200 E models. The Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard also fly the E model.
Kandahar Airfield, Kandahar Provence, Afghanistan was used by the RAF for combat operations from 2001 to 2014.

The Illinois Air National Guard (IL ANG) is the Air Force militia of the US state of Illinois. It is an element of the Illinois National Guard along with the Illinois Army National Guard. As state militia units, units in the Illinois Air National Guard are not part of the normal United States Air Force chain of command. Under the Total Force concept, Illinois Air National Guard units are Air Reserve Components (ARC) of the United States Air Force (USF). Illinois ANG units are trained and equipped by the Air Force and, if federalized, operationally recruited by USAF Headquarters. In addition, Illinois Air National Guard personnel are assigned to the Air Expeditionary Force and are subject to deployment during their designated deployment cycle, along with their active duty and Air Force Reserve counterparts.

In addition to federal reserve duties, as state police units, elements of the Illinois ANG must be activated by order of the governor to protect life and property and maintain peace, order, and public safety. State missions include disaster relief, search and rescue, protection of critical public services, and civil defense assistance during earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires.
The 126th Air Refueling Wing provides air refueling support to the major commands of the United States Air Force, as well as other U.S. military and allied forces.

New Army National Guard Readiness Center And Army Aviation Support Facility
The Militia Act of 1903 established the current National Guard system, units created by the states but paid by the federal government, directly responsible for public service. If federalized by presidential order, they would be part of the regular military chain of command. On June 1, 1920, the Militia Bureau issued Circular No. 1 on the Organization of Air National Guard Units.
The history of the Illinois Air National Guard dates back to 1927 in an armory at Michigan Avenue and 16th Street in Chicago. It was the first home of the 108th Surveillance Squadron, the oldest unit of the Illinois Air National Guard. The original 16 officers and 74 enlisted men were mostly World War I veterans from Chicago who flew PT-1s. From that small contingent grew a large operation that moved to Midway Municipal Airport.
The unit distinguished itself in World War II by conducting anti-submarine patrols in North American O-47s from a base near the Panama Canal. In September 1943, the unit was deactivated.
The Illinois ANG unit later emerged during World War II as the 304th Fighter Squadron, which was activated on 23 July 1942. The 304th FS was assigned to and served with the 337th Fighter Group (FG) at Air Pinellas County, Florida. Operational training unit equipped with P-39 Airacobra and P-40 Warhawk. The 304th PF was disbanded on May 1, 1944.

On 24 May 1946, the United States Army Air Forces, in response to severe postwar military budget cuts imposed by President Harry S. Truman, allocated inactive units to the National Guard Bureau to form the Air National Guard. These units were separated and assigned to various State National Guard Bureaus to be assigned unit designations for reassignment as Air National Guard units.
Headed by Lt. Col. Ralph Pickering, 169th FS, conducted its first training in December 1946 and received federal recognition on 21 June 1947. By the end of the first year, the unit consisted of 40 officers and 215 enlisted men. The original base consisted of a shale runway and one hangar for eight F-51D Mustang fighters, four AT-6 trainers and a B-26 target aircraft. The first annual training was held at Midway Municipal Airport, with the flight taking place at Douglas Field.
Finally, on September 30, 1948, the 170th Fighter Squadron, the founding member of the 183rd Fighter Wing, received federal recognition at a Thursday night meeting of 60 at the State Armory.
During the Korean War, the 170th Fighter Squadron was ordered to 21 months of federal service on 1 March 1951. Ten days later, the squadron deployed to Bergstrom Air Force Base in Texas. In April, the unit was reassigned to the 170th Fighter-Bomber Squadron. On 31 July, the 170th moved to George Air Force Base, California, and was assigned to the Tactical Air Command.
