Il76 Aircraft - The Ilyushin Il-76 (Russian: Илью́шин Il-76; NATO codename: Candid) is a fixed-wing four-engine turbofan multi-purpose strategic air transport aircraft designed by the Ilyushin Design Bureau of the Soviet Union. It was first planned as a commercial cargo aircraft in 1967, as a replacement for the Antonov An-12. It is designed to transport heavy machinery to remote, underserved areas. Military versions of the Il-76 are in widespread use in Europe, Asia and Africa, including as aerial tankers or command centers.

The Il-76 has a wide range of services as a commercial ramp delivery cargo ship, especially for oversized or heavy items that cannot be transported by other means. It is also used as an emergency vehicle for civilian evacuation and humanitarian and disaster relief around the world. It is useful in green areas due to its ability to operate on unpaved runways. Specialized models for aerial firefighting and zero-weight training are also produced.

Between 1979 and 1991, Soviet Air Force Il-76s flew 14,700 sorties into Afghanistan, carrying 786,200 sorties and 315,800 tons of cargo. Il-76 carried 89% of Soviet troops and 74% of air cargo. Since the Afghan insurgents were unable to shoot down the high-flying I-76, their tactic was to try to damage it during takeoff or landing. The Il-76 was frequently hit by shoulder-fired Stinger and Strela thermal targeting missiles, as well as large caliber machine guns, but the aircraft had a very low hit rate due to its strong airframe which could take considerable damage and still function normally expenses. On August 3, 1995, an Airstan Ilyushin Il-76 piloted by a Russian crew was shot down by fighter jets of the Taliban-controlled Afghan Air Force in what became known as the Airstan incident. The crew was held for almost a year but escaped and managed to sneak into the plane, which was still stranded at the airport, and flew out of Afghanistan.
