Il-26 Aircraft - The Ilyushin Il-76 (Russian: Ilyushin Il-76; NATO reporting name: Candid) is a multirole, four-engine turbofan strategic multi-role transport aircraft designed by the Ilyushin Design Bureau of the Soviet Union. It was first planned as a commercial freighter in 1967, as a replacement for the Antonov An-12. It is designed to deliver heavy machinery to remote, underserved areas. Military versions of the Il-76 are widely used in Europe, Asia and Africa, including use as an aerial refueling tank or command center.
The Il-76 has seen extensive service as a ramp loading commercial freighter, especially for large or heavy items that cannot be transported otherwise. It is also used as an emergency transport for civilian evacuation as well as for humanitarian aid and disaster relief around the world. Because of its ability to operate from unpaved runways, it was useful in undeveloped areas. Specialized models are also produced for aerial fire and zero-G training.

It was designed to replace the Antonov An-12. Another integrated version was a double-decker plane with 250 passengers, but that project was cancelled. The Il-76 first flew in March 1971 (1971-03).
Production of the Il-76 was assigned to the Tashkt Aviation Production Association in Tashkt, Uzbekistan, Republic of the USSR. About 860 basic transport variants were produced.
Were developed (MF, TF), with a cargo area 20 m (66 ft) long, 3.4 m (11 ft) wide and 3.4 m (11 ft) high; these larger variants were not produced in significant quantities due to financial difficulties faced by the Russian Air Force, which was the primary operator of the type.
Since 2004, a number of aircraft in commercial service have been upgraded to the Il-76TD-90VD version; this included the adoption of the newly developed PS-90 engine to comply with European noise limits.

The Il-76 variant also serves as a fire-fighting water bomb. Its airframe was used as the basis for the Beriev A-50 'Mainstai' AEV&C (airborne early warning and control) aircraft; about 25 planes were built.
Another application for this type has been found in auxiliary flights in Antarctica and for performing simulated weightlessness training for cosmonauts (similar to the "vomit comet" used by NASA).

It was announced in 2010 that production of the modernized Il-76, Il-76MD-90A (also known as the Il-476 project in the design phase) would begin; the new proposed production line would be located at Aviastar's facility in Ulyanovsk, Russia, and would operate in conjunction with the Tashkt plant.
On April 29, 2015, it was announced that the Russian Air Force received the first Il-76MD-90A built at the Ulyanovsk factory "Aviastar-SP" from a 2012 contract for 39 aircraft.
The Russian Ministry of Defense received its first production Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A aircraft on April 2, 2019.

Between 1979 and 1991, the Il-76 of the Soviet Air Force flew 14,700 sorties in Afghanistan, transporting 786,200 personnel and 315,800 tons of cargo. The Il-76 transported 89% of Soviet troops and 74% of the transport that was airlifted. Since the Afghan insurgents could not shoot down the high-flying Il-76, their tactic was to try to damage it during takeoff or landing. The Il-76 was frequently targeted by Stinger and Arrow shoulder-mounted heat-seeking missiles and heavy machine gun fire, but because the airframe's strong airframes were able to withstand significant damage and remain operational, the aircraft had an extremely low attrition rate during this period of conflict. In 2004, the Il-76s of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLAAF) flew a flight mission in Afghanistan, and later in 2011, PLAAF Il-76s were stationed in Libya to evacuate Chinese nationals. Both missions were the PLAAF's first reported steps in developing a long-range transport capability.

Since the beginning of the war, in April 2011 (and until July 2012), about 20 military flights have been made to and from Tehran through Iraqi airspace. On June 14, 2014, a Ukrainian Air Force Il-76 was shot down by land-based fire from pro-Russian separatists while approaching a landing in Luhansk, resulting in the deaths of 40 soldiers and nine crew members on board.
On January 30, 2017, an Il-76 firefighter of the Russian EMERCOM agency was deployed to Chile to assist firefighters. This task took 39 days.
